William served in the military at Little Rock, Arkansas, on 7 May 1863.3 William served in the military at Melville, Missouri, on 17 August 1864.4,5 He married Lucinda A. Jennings at Springfield, Missouri, on 19 June 1867. William was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census at Carroll County, Arkansas. William was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census at Carroll County, Arkansas. William was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census at Carroll County, Arkansas. William died on 16 January 1912 at Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas, at age 68. His body was interred in January 1912 at Bunch Cemetery, near Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas, at Bunch Cemetery. Here is a report by Thomas R. Morrow Jr. who went to Bunch Cemetery in July, 1998: "Directions to Bunch Cemetery in Carroll County, Arkansas. Map coordinates/GPS reading: 36'24.33N -93'34.58W. From the junction of Hwy 62 and Hwy 21 just east of the Berryville town square take Hwy 21 North. Go exactly 2 miles to the junction of Hwy 21 and Hwy 221. Take left turn onto Hwy 221 and go exactly 7/10 mile to County Road 403. Take left turn onto County Road 403 and go exactly 1/10 mile to County Road 428. Take left turn onto County Road 428. Go exactly 3/10 mile to gate in fence on right side of road. This is gate to the cemetery. There is no sign to indicate the fact. It looks just like a farm gate. I could not see the cemetery from the County Road 428 in the summer. Perhaps you could see it in the winter. Inside the locked gate (I had to climb over) the dirt road goes straight down a very gentle slope to a wooded area. This road is lined by fences and trees and there are fields on either side. The track is infrequently used but appears to be recently mowed. About 250-300 yards down it turns to the left and as you make the turn the cemetery comes into view. There is a large oak tree at the entrance to the cemetery clearing. The cemetery itself is pretty small and roughly square in shape and consists of neatly ordered rows. Trees surround it on all sides. The turf was recently mowed and the place appeared well kept. A very quiet and peaceful place. As you stand under the large tree at the entrance and look out into the cemetery the center appears to be the oldest section and there are field stones or no markers at all. In the center section, off to the right, there is another large tree. Under it are buried Wm. J. Maxwell and Lucinda Maxwell next to each other. His tombstone is apparently of government issue and reads: "Co. E. 15th Missouri Cavalry" surrounded by the union shield. Below Wm.'s feet and slightly to the right are buried the infant sons of N.D. & M.A. Maxwell. When I got close to the cemetery I saw a nice looking elderly lady outside a house and asked her for directions. She saved me alot of tromping around chasing a GPS track in the mid-day July heat! It was hotter than Hades and it was high noon when I arrived. She did not know who had the key to the gate. She also told me that the red house on the right just before you get to the gate of the cemetery was a Civil War home.".
